FAQs – Doulas by the Bay

Getting Started

Your consultation is the first step. We'll talk about your family, your due date or baby's age, the kind of support you're looking for, your budget, and what level of support would feel most helpful. It's a chance to ask questions, explore your options, and see what feels like the right fit for your family.
Yes. We usually coordinate virtual interviews with available doula matches so you can ask questions and choose the person who feels like the best fit for your family.
We match families based on the type of support needed, timing, availability, personality fit, and any preferences you'd like us to consider, including language, cultural background, or previous experience.
In many cases, we can begin sharing available doula matches within one to two days. From there, we coordinate Zoom interviews so you can meet two or more doulas and choose the best fit for your family. Once you decide, we finalize the contract, payment, and next steps so support can begin smoothly.
For birth doula support, many families reach out during the second trimester, though it's never too early to start the conversation. For postpartum, overnight, or sibling support, booking during pregnancy often gives you the best chance of having care in place when you need it.
Once you're ready, we finalize the agreement, confirm payment and scheduling details, and coordinate next steps so everyone feels clear and prepared before services begin.
Pricing depends on the type of support you need, whether that's birth, postpartum, overnight, sibling support, or a combination. We offer flexible packages, accept HSA/FSA, and provide payment plan options. During your consultation, we can walk you through what makes the most sense for your family.
Coverage is evolving, and some families may have access through Medi-Cal, Kaiser, or fertility-related benefits. We can help you understand the process and provide helpful documents when available, but coverage always depends on your specific plan.

Birth Doula Services

A birth doula provides emotional, physical, and informational support during labor and birth. Your doula can help with comfort measures, position changes, partner support, calm communication, and helping you feel more grounded and supported throughout the experience.
Yes. Prenatal support can include reviewing your birth preferences, comfort tools, hospital or birth-center plans, feeding goals, partner roles, and when to call your doula.
Yes. Doulas support many birth paths. Whether your birth is spontaneous, induced, medicated, unmedicated, or surgical, the goal is the same: to help you feel informed, calm, and cared for.
Absolutely. A doula does not replace your partner. Your doula helps your partner feel more confident, involved, and supported by offering guidance on how to comfort you, when to step in, and when to rest.
No. Doulas do not diagnose, treat, or make medical decisions. They help you understand your options, ask thoughtful questions, and communicate your preferences with your medical team.

Postpartum Doula & Night Doula Services

A postpartum doula supports the parent, baby, and flow of the home after birth. Support may include newborn care, breast/chestfeeding or bottle feeding support, diapering, soothing, light baby laundry, simple meals, and emotional check-ins.
Yes. Families can choose day support, night support, or a mix of both depending on their needs, schedule, and doula availability.
An overnight doula helps with nighttime baby care so parents can get more rest. This may include bringing the baby to the parent for feeds, bottle feeding if that is the family's plan, diapering, burping, soothing, and supporting safe sleep routines.
Postpartum visits can begin as soon after birth as your family needs support. Many families find the first days and first couple of weeks especially valuable, when help with rest, feeding, newborn care, and recovery can make a meaningful difference. We can help you plan a start date that feels realistic and supportive for your family.
Yes. Doulas can offer basic feeding support, positioning help, bottle routines, pumping organization, and encouragement. For latch pain, supply concerns, or medical feeding issues, we refer families to an IBCLC or medical provider.
Yes. Postpartum support can be planned around your family's needs, preferred days or nights, start date, and doula availability. We'll help you create a schedule that feels realistic and supportive.
Yes. Many families use postpartum support to build confidence with newborn cues, soothing, swaddling, diapering, bathing, feeding routines, and safe sleep.
Postpartum doulas can support calming routines, safe sleep, and nighttime care, but formal sleep training or sleep consulting is a separate service.

Sibling Doula Services

Sibling doula support helps older children feel cared for and supported while parents focus on birth, recovery, and the new baby. It can include play, meals, routines, reassurance, and practical care during a major family transition.
Yes, depending on timing and availability. Sibling support can help your older child stay safe, calm, and cared for while you and your partner focus on labor and birth.
Yes. Sibling support can help older children adjust to the new baby, maintain familiar routines, and give parents space to rest, feed, shower, or recover.
It includes practical childcare, but it is also transition support. The goal is not only to supervise your child, but to help them feel secure, understood, and included during a big family change.
Yes. Many families combine services when they have a toddler or older child at home. We can help you think through what kind of support would feel most helpful and when.
Please share your child's routine, meals, allergies, nap or bedtime needs, comfort items, emergency contacts, and household preferences so support feels smooth, familiar, and reassuring.

About DOULAS by the BAY

DBB doulas are employees, not independent contractors. This allows us to provide more structure, accountability, mentorship, team support, and backup planning for families.
Yes. Our doulas are vetted, trained, and supported through clear professional standards before they begin working with families.
Yes. We always welcome language, cultural, personality, and experience preferences. We do our best to honor those needs based on doula availability.
Please let us know during the consultation. We consider pets when matching families with doulas, especially if a doula has allergies or comfort limits.
We use your due date as a planning guide and stay flexible as things change. The earlier we begin the matching process, the easier it is to plan around your birth window.
Because DOULAS by the BAY works as a team, we can help plan backup support when needed. If a schedule change or backup match becomes necessary, we communicate clearly and guide you through the next steps.
